⁣T. S. Flanders talks to Byzantine Catholic Linden Predy about the history of the Greek schism after the Council of Florence. This council is viewed as a "failure" by the Greek schismatics, but it also became the basis for many Eastern Catholic churches to be in full union with the Holy See. We will talk about this council and everything that came after, including the creation of the now 23 different Eastern Catholic churches within the one Holy Catholic Church. This is the final part of a three part series on the history of the Greek schism:

⁣Merry Christmas! There is a growing trend among Protestant Christians to quit observing Christmas due to a number of factors, one of which is: The Bible doesn't say that Christ was born on Dec 25. In this episode, I discuss some writings of some early Church Fathers and Scriptural texts that shed some light on the issue.
N.B. This is not a serious, scholarly study of the issue, only a cursory study of the basics. Perhaps next year I will have a real scholar on the show to discuss the issue in greater depth!

NBC University Theater was a brand the National Broadcasting Co. applied to a category of radio programming. Although not actually a university, some colleges and universities collaborated in some of the programming, either contributing to its content or including the programming in their curriculum. NBC University Theater's most well-known radio series was The World's Great Novels. NBC used the name "University Theater" or similar from about 1923–1947. (Wikipedia)

What Americans were listening to the evening of December 7, 1941 after the Pearl Harbor Attack

Norman Corwin's "Between Americans" with Orson Welles

Chuck the TV and discover a whole new world with our 24/7 live stream! http://Listen.ChestertonRadio.com

Norman Lewis Corwin was an American writer, screenwriter, producer, essayist and teacher of journalism and writing. His earliest and biggest successes were in the writing and directing of radio drama during the 1930s and 1940s.

Corwin was among the first producers to regularly use entertainment—even light entertainment—to tackle serious social issues. In this area, he was a peer of Orson Welles and William N. Robson, and an inspiration to other later radio/TV writers such as Rod Serling, Gene Roddenberry, Norman Lear, J. Michael Straczynski and Yuri Rasovsky.

He was the son of Samuel and Rose Corwin and was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Corwin was a major figure during the Golden Age of Radio. During the 1930s and 1940s he was a writer and producer of many radio programs in many genres: history, biography, fantasy, fiction, poetry and drama. He was the writer and creator of series such as The Columbia Workshop, 13 By Corwin, 26 By Corwin and others. He was a lecturer at the University of Southern California.

Corwin won a One World Award, two Peabody Medals, an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a duPont-Columbia Award; he was nominated for an Academy Award for Writing Adapted Screenplay for Lust for Life (1956). On May 12, 1990, he received an Honorary Doctorate from Lincoln College. In 1996, he received the Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa from California Lutheran University. Corwin was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1993.

A documentary film on Corwin's life, A Note of Triumph: The Golden Age of Norman Corwin, won an Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Feature) in 2006. Les Guthman's feature documentary on Mr. Corwin's career, Corwin aired on PBS in the 1990s. He was inducted into the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters Diamond Circle in 1994. (Wikipedia)

⁣"The ideas of progress and of the indefinite perfectibility of the human race belong to Democratic ages. The America of 1831 is devoted to Equality. And Equality suggests several ideas that would not have originated from any other source and it modifies almost all those previously entertained. I take as an example the idea of human perfectibility and progress because it is a great philosophical theory everywhere to be displayed in the conduct of human affairs."

Democracy in America is a dramatization of Alexis de Tocqueville’s book which follows Tocqueville and his companion, Gustave de Beaumont, from their landing in New York in May of 1831 through their departure nine months later.

De La Démocratie en Amérique published in two volumes is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville. Its title translates as On Democracy in America, but English translations are usually simply entitled Democracy in America. In the book, Tocqueville examines the democratic revolution that he believed had been occurring over the previous several hundred years.

He begins his book by describing the change in social conditions taking place. He observed that over the previous seven hundred years the social and economic conditions of men had become more equal. The aristocracy, Tocqueville believed, was gradually disappearing as the modern world experienced the beneficial effects of equality. Tocqueville traced the development of equality to a number of factors, such as granting all men permission to enter the clergy, widespread economic opportunity resulting from the growth of trade and commerce, the royal sale of titles of nobility as a monarchical fundraising tool, and the abolition of primogeniture

⁣The Cement of Democracy - Alexis de Tocqueville - Democracy in America - Episode 6/14

"In Europe Christianity has been intimately united to the powers of the Earth. Those powers are now in decay and religion has been buried under their decay. But the Americans combine the notions of Christianity and of Liberty so intimately in their minds that it is impossible to make them conceive the one without the other. Despotism may govern without faith but Liberty can not."

What if CBS Radio News were present at the Trial of John Peter Zenger? Historical events presented as live radio news reports!

The truth proves to be a successful defense against the charges of libel.

John Peter Zenger was a German printer and journalist in New York City. Zenger printed The New York Weekly Journal. He was accused of libel in 1734 by William Cosby, the royal governor of New York, but the jury acquitted Zenger, who became a symbol for freedom of the press.

In 1733, Zenger began printing The New York Weekly Journal, which voiced opinions critical of the colonial governor, William Cosby. On November 17, 1734, on Cosby's orders, the sheriff arrested Zenger. After a grand jury refused to indict him, the Attorney General Richard Bradley charged him with libel in August 1735.

Zenger's lawyers, Andrew Hamilton and William Smith, Sr., successfully argued that truth is a defense against charges of libel.

Created by Goodman Ace for CBS Radio, it blended history with modern technology, taking an entire network newsroom on a figurative time warp each week reporting the great events of the past. Reporters included John Charles Daly, Don Hollenbeck, and Richard C. Hottelet. The series was first heard on July 7, 1947, under the title CBS Is There. Its final broadcast was on March 19, 1950, under the title You Are There.

According to author/historian Martin Grams, actor Canada Lee was a guest in episodes 32 and 60. Martin Gabel appeared in character in episode 82. The first 23 broadcasts went under the title CBS Is There and beginning with episode 24, the title changed to You Are There. A total of 90 episodes were broadcast. Only 75 episodes are known to exist in recorded form

Enjoy Elfland Radio - our 24/7 Live Stream! http://Listen.ChestertonRadio.com

"I've got a story I want you to hear. A story that's important to you overseas and me on the home front. This is why I think it's important. You know that in the United States you can walk to the corner newspaper stand and make your own choice of various newspapers. You know too that they are likely to disagree with each other in their views and some of them are likely to disagree with the administration in power. We take that for granted. Still you don't get arrested for buying the paper you want and no publisher gets arrested for printing it. Even in the midst of a tough war we allow so much freedom of criticism that sometimes it worries people from other countries but we know it's our strength. Better to allow this freedom... better to allow it to be abused at times than to let one group of people decide what should be printed and what we should think. We've seen where that can land... in Germany and Japan."

"Now this particular freedom wasn't won in America without some pretty hard fights. This is a story of one of the most crucial and important of those struggles."

Andrew Hamilton was a Scottish lawyer in the Thirteen Colonies, where he finally settled in Philadelphia. He was best known for his legal victory on behalf of the printer and newspaper publisher John Peter Zenger. His involvement with the 1735 decision in New York helped to establish that truth is a defense to an accusation of libel. His eloquent defense concluded with saying that the press has "a liberty both of exposing and opposing tyrannical power by speaking and writing truth."

His success in this case has been said to have inspired the now-archaic term "Philadelphia lawyer", meaning a particularly adept and clever attorney, as in "It would take a Philadelphia lawyer to get him off." His estate in Philadelphia, known as Bush Hill, was inherited by his son, William Hamilton, who leased it for use as the vice-president's house during the years that the city was the temporary capital of the United States. ⁣One of the strangely fascinating characters in all history. A barbaric chieftain who became head of the western Roman empire.

Elfland Radio - Our all-day live stream is here: http://Listen.ChestertonRadio.com

Significant enough to be the head of a medieval saga. He dreamed a great dream of recovering Roman Civilization, uniting it with the new Christian faith, and handing the union on for the peace and culture of succeeding ages.

Lives of Great Men presents the stories of leaders in human progress by Dr. Edward Howard Griggs. In this series Dr. Griggs builds the story of civilization based on outstanding characters through the ages.

Theodoric the Great), was king of the Ostrogoths (471–526), and ruler of the independent Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy between 493 and 526, regent of the Visigoths (511–526), and a patrician of the East Roman Empire. As ruler of the combined Gothic realms, Theodoric controlled an empire stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Adriatic Sea. Though Theodoric himself only used the title 'king' (rex), some scholars characterize him as a Western Roman Emperor in all but name, since he ruled large parts of the former Western Roman Empire, had received the former Western imperial regalia from Constantinople in 497, and was referred to by the title Augustus by some of his subjects.

As a young child of an Ostrogothic nobleman, Theodoric was taken as a hostage to Constantinople, where he spent his formative years and received an East Roman education (paideia). Theodoric returned to Pannonia around 470, and throughout the 470s he campaigned against the Sarmatians and competed for influence among the Goths of the Roman Balkans. The emperor Zeno made him a commander of the Eastern Roman forces in AD 483, and in AD 484 he was named consul. Nevertheless, Theodoric remained in constant hostilities with the emperor and frequently raided East Roman lands.

At the behest of Zeno, in 489 Theodoric attacked Odoacer, the king of Italy, emerging victorious in 493. As the new ruler of Italy, he upheld a Roman legal administration and scholarly culture and promoted a major building program across Italy. In 505 he expanded into the Balkans, and by 511 he had brought the Visigothic Kingdom of Spain under his direct control and established hegemony over the Burgundian and Vandal kingdoms. Theodoric died in 526 and was buried in a grand mausoleum in Ravenna. He lived on as the figure Dietrich von Bern in Germanic heroic legend. (Wikipedia)
