⁣Join us with our special guest, Josh, as we pepper our discussion with laughter while rethinking Catholic apologetics. Ever wonder how the early church fathers might sway a Protestant's path? We share Josh's unexpected detours from Protestantism to the welcoming arms of Catholicism, stirred by the rich teachings of those who walked the faith before us.

Scripture is a tapestry, and in this episode, we thread the needle through the vibrant patterns of typology in the Old Testament. We weave the story of Jonah with the ministry of Jesus, demonstrating how these ancient narratives cast a prophetic shadow over the New Testament's revelation. And as we navigate through the labyrinth of biblical interpretation, we tackle the Catholic Church's bold claim to offer infallible guidance. The chessboard of theological debate is set, and we're questioning every move across the Protestant-Catholic divide, calling out for a higher caliber of discourse.

Fasten your seatbelts as we take a sharp turn into the dynamic terrain of salvation. It's not just about punching a ticket to heaven; we reveal how salvation is more akin to a transformative journey—cue the Eastern Catholic concept of theosis and the Latin idea of divinization. We also spin the "first century peasant test," challenging the notion that simplicity lacks depth in scriptural understanding. Tune in for a ride through theology that cuts through the noise to the heart of Christian unity.

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was an English writer, philosopher, lay theologian, and literary and art critic. He has been referred to as the "prince of paradox". Time magazine observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out."

Chesterton created the fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and wrote on apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognised the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, Cardinal John Henry Newman, and John Ruskin.

On his contributions, T. S. Eliot wrote:

"He was importantly and consistently on the side of the angels. Behind the Johnsonian fancy-dress, so reassuring to the British public, he concealed the most serious and revolutionary designs—concealing them by exposure ... Chesterton's social and economic ideas...were fundamentally Christian and Catholic. He did more, I think, than any man of his time—and was able to do more than anyone else, because of his particular background, development and abilities as a public performer—to maintain the existence of the important minority in the modern world. He leaves behind a permanent claim upon our loyalty, to see that the work that he did in his time is continued in ours."

Gilbert Keith Chesterton was an English writer, philosopher, Christian apologist, a literary and art critic. He has been referred to as the "prince of paradox". Of his writing style, Time observed: "Whenever possible, Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out."

Chesterton created the fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and wrote on apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognised the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an orthodox Christian, and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from high church Anglicanism. Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, John Henry Newman and John Ruskin

Chesterton is often associated with his close friend, the poet and essayist Hilaire Belloc. George Bernard Shaw coined the name "Chesterbelloc" for their partnership, and this stuck. Though they were very different men, they shared many beliefs; in 1922, Chesterton joined Belloc in the Catholic faith, and both voiced criticisms of capitalism and socialism. They instead espoused a third way: distributism. G. K.'s Weekly, which occupied much of Chesterton's energy in the last 15 years of his life, was the successor to Belloc's New Witness, taken over from Cecil Chesterton, Gilbert's brother, who died in World War I.(Wikipedia)

Lepanto is a poem by G.K. Chesterton celebrating the victory of the Holy League in the Battle of Lepanto.

Elfland Radio - Our all-day live stream is here: http://Listen.ChestertonRadio.com

Lepanto was written in irregular stanzas of rhyming, roughly paeonic tetrameter couplets, often ending in a quatrain of four dimeter lines. The poem tells of the defeat of the Ottoman fleet of Ali Pasha by the Christian crusader, Don John of Austria. The poem was written in 1911 and its stirring verses helped inspire soldiers such as John Buchan during World War I.

Literary critic Joseph John Reilly described the poem as perfect: "Here Chesterton's vision of life is fulfilled and justified; here the mighty virtues of his world are made glorious anew in the immortal heroism of common men. ... In Lepanto, Chesterton reveals all his poetic gifts at their best: rhetoric in the high sense which De Quincey defined it; music almost as rich as Tennyson's, varied by a chant in which the tread of marching men lives again; color varied and brilliant with the splendor of the East."

Reilly praises the way that Chesterton artistically relieves the martial vigour with contrasting lines which are soft and quiet. For example, lines 5–7 of the following passage are identified as achieving this effect:

Dim drums throbbing, in the hills half heard,
Where only on a nameless throne a crownless prince has stirred,
Where, risen from a doubtful seat and half attainted stall,
The last knight of Europe takes weapons from the wall,
The last and lingering troubadour to whom the bird has sung,
That once went singing southward when all the world was young.
In that enormous silence, tiny and unafraid,
Comes up along a winding road the noise of the Crusade.

— lines 15-22
This subtle restraint is especially praised in the way that the poem ends with a literary reference to Cervantes, who fought in the battle. "Don John did more than save western Europe: ... he made it possible for men unborn to dwell in freedom and to share the kindly and immortal laughter of Don Quixote."

Cervantes on his galley sets the sword back in the sheath
(Don John of Austria rides homeward with a wreath.)
And he sees across a weary land a straggling road in Spain,
Up which a lean and foolish knight forever rides in vain,
And he smiles, but not as Sultans smile, and settles back the blade. ...
(But Don John of Austria rides home from the Crusade.}
— lines 137-142

The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by G. K. Chesterton about the idealised exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great, published in 1911. Written in ballad form, the work has been described as one of the last great traditional epic poems ever written in the English language.

Best of Chesterton Radio any time on our all-day live stream: http://Listen.ChestertonRadio.com

The poem narrates how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun under the auspices of God working through the agency of the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a narration of Alfred's military and political accomplishments, it is also considered a Roman Catholic allegory. Chesterton incorporates a significant amount of philosophy into the basic structure of the story. (Wikipedia)

⁣"The really swift and simple mode of attack on Marxian materialism and collectivism is simply pointing out that it is ugly, not proving that it is unpractical."

Elfland Radio - our 24/7 Live Stream is here: http://Listen.ChestertonRadio.com

"Suppose a man knocks at the door with a proposition for providing everybody with a pair of stilts, so that they can henceforth all walk a bout undefiled by mud and breathing a purer air on a level with the tops of trees. It would take a long time to prove to him that he cannot provide everybody with stilts. You might spend many happy hours with him in your library, looking up encyclopedias and covering papers with calculations, before you had proved to him from the census or the reports of the timber trade or the blue books on afforestation that the thing was impossible...."

"If you want to get rid of the gentlemen selling stilts at the door, it is much quicker to tell him that you don't want any stilts, that you don't like stilts, that he has aroused no stilt motif like music in your mind, or in short that walking on stilts forms no part of your ideal. In short the idealistic answer is short, sharp, and practical; whereas the practical answer is long-winded, elaborate and tiresome..."

"In the same way the really swift and simple mode of attack on Marxian materialism and collectivism is simply pointing out that it is ugly, not proving that it is unpractical. "

On today’s episode of the SSPX Podcast, we’ll continue our Apologetics Series by looking at the concept of revelation. ⁣Join us for a captivating session with our guest, Hugh Owen, founder of the Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation. Hugh takes us on a fascinating journey, unearthing the traditional teachings of the Catholic Church on creation, tracing back to the Catechism of Trent, and delving into St. Thomas' concept of the universe's first perfection. As we walk through this spiritual exploration, we unravel God's supernatural work of creation and the profound significance of the Sabbath.

This episode also exposes the influence of 17th-century philosopher Descartes and how his philosophy of uniformitarian naturalism has shaped modern thought. We dissect how these ideas have fueled evolutionary thought, highlighting the objections raised by theologians of the time. Prepare to challenge conventional secular wisdom as we delve into Young Earth Creationism and the rejection of evolution, revealing fascinating evidence that suggests humans and dinosaurs shared the Earth.

We also navigate the pivotal roles of Vatican Council I and II in shaping Catholic faith teachings and the repercussions of dismissing God's revelation about the world's creation. Discussing evolution's impact on our worldview, we delve into the traditional Catholic doctrine of creation and the absurdity of material processes creating complex coded information without intelligent involvement. So, buckle up, as we embark on this intellectual and spiritual odyssey with Hugh Owen!
