Benedict's resignation was valid. There are various points of the sort made by Fr. Kramer regarding Benedict's resignation which I address in my book on the matter, titled "Valid? The Resignation of Pope Benedict XVI" (see https://www.amazon.com/Valid-R....esignation-Pope-Bene

In particular, I would like to address the misinterpretation of Benedict's words about the "always and forever." If one reads the text, it is explicitly stated that the "always" refers to the loss of "privacy". It assuredly is NOT a reference to the munus, or the papacy. This "loss of privacy" , clear from the rest of the paragraph, refers to the "sons and daughters," "brothers and sisters etc. BXVI gained, upon his election as pope. He speaks of his love for them, and theirs for him. In other words, he is speaking of the bond of love.

Thus, the "always is also a forever" continues this same theme. The "this" of BXVI's statement that his resignation does not "revoke THIS," logically and grammatically refers to this loss of privacy, i..e, the bond of love spoken of in the prior paragraph. That is to say, he is saying his resignation does not revoke, or undo his love for these "sons and daughters"....and thus...this is the reason he explains he will pray for the Church. In other words, I came to love you my "sons and daughters" when I became pope,...and my resignation does not revoke "THIS" (my bond of love toward you), thus I will pray for the Church (i.e., my "sons and daughters", "brothers and sisters" etc).
